Abstract | The recent increase in flex fuel cars sales is demanding a significant increase in ethanol production not only for national use but also for export. This is also causing an increased demand for sugarcane which is mainly achieved through the expansion of the cultivated sugarcane area. Brazil is working hard to consolidate its position as a leader in the market of renewable biofuels. It is also constantly being challenged to become this leader in an environmental sustainable way. Therefore, spatial information on sugarcane cultivated area is not only important for agricultural statistics but also for environmental related issues, especially in the agricultural frontier. The National Institute for Space Research (INPE) is carrying out the Canasat project since the 2003/04 crop year to map the sugarcane area using remote sensing satellite images and GIS techniques. This paper aims to perform an analysis of the evolution of the cultivated sugarcane area in South-Central Brazil from crop year 2005/06 to 2008/09. It was observed that during this period the sugarcane cultivated area increased 54.5%. Currently, the total cultivated area reached 7.16 million ha with 6.58 million ha available for harvest in 2008/09. Although São Paulo State has by far the largest cultivated sugarcane area the highest relative increases were observed for Goiás (126.2%), Mato Grosso do Sul (99.9%) and Minas Gerais (99.2%). A total of 3.12 million ha were incorporated to the cultivated sugarcane area in the analyzed region between 2005/06 and 2008/09. |
